Window screens: clean, repair or replace?

A clean window behind a dirty screen still looks dull. How to tell which one you need.

Clean window screens leaning against the side of a house on a shingled roof.

Clean if the mesh is intact and the frame is straight. Most screens that look worn out are simply filthy: they catch dust the way a filter does, because that is more or less what they are.

Repair if the mesh is torn, or the spline (the rubber cord holding the mesh in) has gone brittle and is falling out. Both are quick fixes.

Replace if the frame is bent, the corners have failed, or the mesh has gone so brittle it crumbles. A frame that has been out of true will not sit properly again, and it rattles.

We do the first two: screen cleaning from $2 a screen, and re-screening from $15 a screen plus the mesh.
