Winter light in Bozeman, and what your windows do with it

On the shortest day Bozeman gets under nine hours of daylight, and the noon sun barely clears 21 degrees. Why the low light favors south windows, and what clean glass can and cannot do.

How short is a Bozeman winter day?

On December 21, 2026, the sun rises over Bozeman at 8:02 in the morning and sets at 4:43 in the afternoon: 8 hours and 41 minutes of daylight. Six months earlier, on the longest day, it is up for 15 hours and 42 minutes.

Why the low sun favors south windows

A sun only 21° up shines almost straight into a south-facing window, and a long way across the room. East and west windows get a short, weak morning or afternoon, and north windows get no direct sun at all. In a Bozeman winter, the south glass is doing most of the work.

Light, sleep and mood

Seasonal affective disorder is depression that comes and goes with the seasons, usually starting in late fall. The National Institute of Mental Health describes it as more common the farther north people live, with episodes lasting about four to five months. The established treatment is a bright light box, 10,000 lux for 30 to 45 minutes each morning, alongside other care. If winter hits you hard, that is a conversation for your doctor, not your window cleaner.

For everyone else, the research points the same way. A panel of sleep and light scientists recommends plenty of bright light in the daytime, from daylight first where possible, and dim light in the evening. A study that fitted more than 85,000 people with light sensors found that more daytime light went with lower rates of depression and other conditions. That is an association, not proof, but it is a consistent one.

What clean windows can and cannot do

Nobody has studied whether washing your windows lifts your mood, and we will not pretend otherwise. What clean glass does is stop dirt taking a share of the little light there is: usually a few percent on an ordinary window, and more on skylights and glass sheltered from the rain (how much light dirty windows block).

One thing a window will not give you is vitamin D. The UV light your skin needs to make it does not pass through window glass.

Making the most of it

  • Get the south-facing glass cleaned in the fall, before the short days.
  • Keep the sills and the first few feet in front of south windows clear.
  • Put the chair you read in, or the plants that need it most, where the low sun lands.
